Understanding the Life Cycle Assessment of Personal Care Products
Understanding the Life Cycle Assessment of Personal Care Products
In the past, the personal care industry has often chosen profits over the planet. Every year the beauty industry produces over 120 billion units of plastic packaging and less than 9% gets recycled. The products we put in and on our bodies have become a leading source of plastic ocean waste and landfill garbage. Ace of Air takes responsibility for the full cycle of their packaging in a 100% circular model.
We collaborated with Long Trail Sustainability (LTS) experts to conduct a life cycle assessment of our competitor brands such as Glossier, Seed Phytonutrients, and La Mer. There were three key findings –
Regardless of the type, over 70% of the cradle-to-grave impacts come from the package.
The lighter the primary package, the more influence the packing material and shipper have on the overall environmental impacts.
The shipper, packing material and secondary package make up a very large portion of the impacts.

Ideation of various forms incorporating two main materials - Stainless steel (this material was swapped with Aluminum to reduce further weight and costs) and natural rubber. The design of the containers incorporates a natural rubber sleeve at the bottom of the jars that absorbs shocks, provides anti-slip protection and becomes a pocket for the ingestible’s insert.
